The thing I appreciate about this book is that it is full of real Vietnamese food by a real Vietnamese local. Having lived in Vietnam for years with my Vietnamese wife, I came to enjoy a huge range of dishes that you'd never see in a Vietnamese restaurant back in Australia or I guess other countries, and I really miss those dishes - true, authentic Vietnamese as the locals eat. I was really impressed to see so many of those favourites of mine (plus some I'm not a fan of, but still really local local dishes) included. My all-time favourite is Banh Cuon.Some things I think they did well include putting the Vietnamese and English names of the dishes (including Vietnamese diacritic marks), so you can know what it actually is, but also be able to know the Vietnamese name of the dish in case you travel to (or live in) Vietnam so you can also order the dishes there.
Also, for many dishes, they give alternatives in terms of preparation - the traditional way that it is cooked in Vietnam, as well as a method that is tailored to suit the equipment and/or ingredients found in most Western kitchens. And being a very visual person, I really appreciate the photos for each step as well as the finished product. I haven't tried preparing many of the dishes yet, but I'm really looking forward to working through the book starting with my favourites.
There are some tiny imperfections in the language (the main case I remember was that it said "enough" instead of "to taste" for how much salt/soy sauce etc. to add), but for me, that just adds to the authenticity - it's truly Vietnamese! That said, all the written directions and descriptions are perfectly clear and easy to understand and follow.
This is definitely a must-have for anyone who wants to learn to prepare truly authentic Vietnamese dishes, and not just from one region, but from all over the country. Well worth it!
